JVL Presents on Biomass Composting Potential at WACEE 2015
At the 5th West African Clean Energy & Environment Exhibition & Conference (WACEE 2015) held in February 2015 at the Accra International Conference Centre, Jekora Ventures highlighted the potential for transforming organic waste into valuable compost products in Ghana.
Presentation Details
Title: No Waste to Waste – Productive Use of
Biomass
Presenter: Akua Akyaa Nkrumah, Innovations Manager
Event: WACEE 2015
Date: February 11-13, 2015
The Pilot Compost Plant
Innovations Manager Akua Akyaa Nkrumah outlined how Jekora Ventures had established a small plant to pilot the production of compost from waste collected within the Osu Klottey Municipality.
Although the plant was producing under its 12 tonnes per day capacity, she emphasized that it has the potential to be scaled up to produce more manure for farmers and gardening.
Impressive Results
"We have in the last 23 months been able to divert 1,077 tonnes of waste from the landfill site, with potential to do 30 per cent in their operational area and another 30 per cent within the entire Accra Metropolis (AMA)," Ms. Nkrumah reported.
Ghana's Biomass Potential
The conference also featured research from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which estimated about 2,700 cubic metres of biomass available in Ghana. This could generate about 97 Petajoules of heat, translating into the production of over 110 megawatts of power countrywide.
Sources of biomass identified include agricultural and forest residues, municipal waste, wood waste and slabs, empty fruit branches, and sawdust.
Conference Success
WACEE 2015 attracted over 1,100 visitors in the first two days alone and featured an official German pavilion with 21 exhibitors sponsored by the Federal German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
