JVL Shares PPP Experience at Sanitation Conference in Malawi
In the city of Blantyre, Malawi saw the convening of cities and countries from the 4th to 6th of December, 2017 that have benefited from joint grants from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and Department for International Development (DfID) in fecal sludge management (FSM) in cities.
Meeting Objectives
The objectives of the meeting were to:
- Highlight the role of the private sector, local governments, water and sanitation utilities and civil society in the sanitation value chain
- Identify lessons learned, best practices, and common challenges in FSM service, and the design and implementation of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) and Service Level Agreements (SLA)
- Identify ways forward for sustainable PPP and SLA implementation in participating cities
- Develop learnings that will be consolidated into a final report to share with the sector
JVL's Contribution
JVL shared experiences and lessons from the private sector perspective on the PPP that had been facilitated by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in 2014 between JVL and Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) that led to the construction and launching of the first ever Fortifer™ production plant in Borteyman, Accra.

Mr. Immanuel Nartey-Tokoli, MD of JVL, highlighted that the PPP between JVL and TMA is unique in that it protects the interests of both parties while providing the right incentive for delivering improved sanitation services in Tema and Accra.
