Bishop Bowers School Visits Ga-Mashie Compost Facility
On Friday, June 14, 2019, a total of seventy-three (73) people – composed of six (6) staff members and sixty-seven (67) JHS 2 students from the Bishop Bowers School – were received at the facility.
After passing through security clearance, the group was briefed on the JVL Health and Safety Guide for Visitors by the Site Contact. With the help of the visiting supervisors, the students were then grouped into two (2) smaller units so they could be taken through the tour concurrently while ensuring effective communication and interaction with all the students.
The tours were provided by the two Site Supervisors, Mr. Excel Wordi and Mr. Gabriel Tetteh, under the general supervision of the Innovations Manager, Mrs. Martha A. Annan.
What the Students Learned
The entire exercise took about 30 minutes during which the visitors were provided with three key areas of information:
- Background on JVL waste management practices and professionalism
- Recycling of plastic and paper as practiced by JVL
- Aerobic composting of source-segregated food waste and sawdust to produce JVL CompSoil
Impact on Students
The tour was very impactful as many lessons were learned in the process. The majority of the students left the site having a reason to advocate for good sanitation practices and a few even considered a career path along the corridors of waste management.
The visitors vacated the premises with a great feeling of satisfaction. Of course, this feeling was mutual as Jekora Ventures Limited was also fulfilled in taking the opportunity to educate and spread the message of the need for integrated waste management approaches as a strategy to aid in becoming good stewards of the environment.
